Description:
The Department of English Language and Literature at Queen's University
invites applications for the position of Director of the Strathy Language
Unit. The position is for a five-year term (renewable) at 50% Full Time
Equivalent, beginning August 1, 2010. Reporting to the Head of the
Department of English, the Director is responsible for the day-to-day
operations of the Unit, an endowed research unit whose mandate is to
provide an authoritative guide to spoken and written English in Canada. The
Unit maintains an electronic database of Canadian writings to facilitate
the task of studying English usage in Canada and is a national and
international resource for research on Canadian English. In addition to
administrative responsibility for the overall operation of the Unit, the
Director is responsible for maintaining its research collections, writing
an annual report to the Trust and the Head of the Department of English,
serving the academic and non-academic community as a reference resource on
English usage in Canada, and initiating or collaborating in a publishing
project consistent with the mandate of the Unit. Qualifications include a
graduate degree in English literature or linguistics, administrative
experience, excellent organizational and communication skills, and a
working knowledge of French. A knowledge of lexicography, electronic
language reference databases, and new publishing technologies would be an
asset. Consideration will be given to both education and experience.
