The current opening is for:
PhD/post doc project 1 (vacancy no 681019-A) starting date 1-10-2010
(negotiable, post doc between 1 Oct 2010 and 1 Feb 2011):
The project investigates logical meanings of expressions like 'each other'
or 'mutually'. Such 'reciprocal' expressions are affected in interesting
way by common sense meanings of words they combine with, as in 'wash each
other' or 'mutually praise'. Two issues are addressed:
- What is the range of logical meanings that are affected by common sense
knowledge?
- How should a formal theory of meaning explain the way people compute
such effects?
The project combines methods from formal semantics and cognitive
psychology, especially Prototype Theory.

PhD/post doc project 2 (vacancy no 681019-B)) starting date 1-10-2010
(negotiable, post doc between 1 Oct 2010 and 1 Feb 2011):
The project investigates meanings of expressions like 'near' or 'contain',
pertaining to relations in the physical space. Such 'spatial' expressions
partake in interesting ways in determining logical meanings of expressions
like 'near/far from a gas station', or `above/between clouds'. Two issues
are addressed:
- What is the range of spatial meanings that affect logical interpretation
in this way?
- How should a formal theory of meaning explain the way people compute
such effects?
The project uses methods from formal semantics, together with methods from
conceptual semantics.

Applicants for a post doc employment hold a PhD (completed at least one
month prior to employment), as well as demonstrated capacities as an
independent researcher, in the form of publications. You have a PhD in in
formal semantics of natural language.
Applicants for a PhD position have a MA/MSc in in theoretical linguistics,
(project 1, vacancy no 681019-A, also cognitive science) or one of the
exact sciences. Candidates expecting to graduate by 1 September 2010 can
also apply.
