Jobs: Experimental Linguistics: Post BA Researcher, UC Santa Cruz

Editor for this issue: Christy Bird <christylinguistlist.org>

The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity, nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international employment page at http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

FOUNDATION FELLOW IN LINGUISTICS

The Linguistics Research Center and the Department of Linguistics at the

the Foundation Fellowship, a full-time post-baccalaureate research
position. The campus is especially interested in candidates who can
contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community
through their campus contributions.

OBJECTIVES AND DUTIES: This position is intended for individuals who hold
the BA degree and who would like to gain significant research experience in
preparation for a research career in linguistics or related cognitive
science disciplines.

The Fellow will have two kinds of duties:

(1) To provide research support to the research labs, in maintaining the
existing computational infrastructure of the labs and developing new tools.
The Fellow will help improve and develop systems to facilitate the sharing
of data and the disseminating of research. This task includes, but is not
limited to, improving the existing network of research machines in the
labs, assessing data security, and optimizing the operation of web-based
experiments. The scope of the work will be jointly determined by the labs'
specific goals and the Fellow's own initiative and expertise.

(2) To undertake a collaborative research project, the Fellow will work
with faculty mentors to develop a project that addresses a problem in
linguistics from a novel perspective. Research interests in the department
span the gamut from sound to meaning, and a variety of analytical and
experimental approaches are pursued. See the faculty and graduate student
profiles at http://ling.ucsc.edu for a sample of possible topics or the LRC
Labs web site http://lrc.ucsc.edu/labs/.

RANK: Junior Specialist

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: The duration of the fellowship is 9 months.
Stipend/salary is $25,254 with mid-level benefits.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: We are seeking applicants with a background in
linguistics and strong practical skills in computer programming and/or
information management/retrieval. Applicants should have completed a BA, BS
or equivalent by the time of appointment (Summer or Fall 2010).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will have both an
independent, self-starting drive, and the ability to interact comfortably
in a large, diverse and collegial community. Experience with Linux/Unix
systems, the LAMP architecture, and web development (i.e., Javascript, PHP,
Python, and Perl) is desirable.

POSITION AVAILABLE: September 1, 2010 - May 31, 2011

TO APPLY: Electronic Submission is Preferred. Applicants for the position
should submit a cover letter outlining interests and relevant
