Typology of Periphrasis Date: 07-Jun-2010 - 08-Jun-2010 Location: Guildford, United Kingdom Contact: Marina Chumakina Contact Email: m.tchoumakina surrey.ac.uk Meeting URL: http://www.surrey.ac.uk/LIS/SMG/periphrasis/workshop.htm Linguistic Field(s): Morphology; Syntax Meeting Description: Note: This conference has been rescheduled from April 2010, when the volcanic ash situation prevented most speakers from coming. In June 2010 the Surrey Morphology group will be holding a two-day conference on periphrasis, the situation where a grammatical function normally realised by a single word is expressed by more than one word. The dual nature of periphrasis (morphological function performed by means of syntax) presents interesting problems for linguistic theory. These have not yet been resolved, in part because the theoretical devices available have been inadequate and partly because the range of data considered has been rather narrow. Little is known about the extent of typological variation of periphrastic constructions, their interaction with the morphology and syntax of the languages they are found in, the way they adapt to morphological structure, and the changes they undergo over time on the way from being a free syntactic phrase to being a part of the inflectional paradigm. The conference arises from an ESRC funded project on periphrasis, within the Surrey Morphology Group, involving Greville Corbett, Dunstan Brown and Marina Chumakina. PhD bursaries: We will be offering some support for PhD students who wish to attend the conference, towards accommodation in Guildford and reasonable travel costs. If you would like to apply, please send a short email stating why this conference is relevant for your PhD programme and a brief covering email from your supervisor, to: m.tchoumakina surrey.ac.uk By May 17, 12:00 (GMT) Registration: There is no conference fee, but if you would like to attend the conference, it is important that you fill the Registration form: http://www.surrey.ac.uk/LIS/SMG/periphrasis/workshop.htm Aranovich, Raul: Clitic Clusters, Verbal Periphrases, and the Morphological Blocking Principle Bonami, Olivier and Polett Samvelian: A Persian Lesson on Periphrasis, Typology and Formal Grammar Bonami, Olivier and Gert Webelhuth: The Phrase-structural Diversity of Periphrasis: a Lexicalist Account Chumakina, Marina: Periphrasis in Archi Corbett, Greville G.: Periphrasis and Possible Lexemes Evans, Nicholas: Periphrasis in Dalabon Giannaris, Athanasios: The Formation of the 'Coniugatio Periphrastica' in Ancient Greek Nikolaeva, Irina: Periphrasis in Nenets Schultze-Berndt, Eva: Between Periphrasis and Predication: The Curious Case of the Jaminjung Progressive Construction (to be confirmed) Spencer, Andrew and Gergana Popova: Relatedness in Periphrasis: a Paradigm-based Perspective Stump, Gregory: Periphrasis in Sanskrit Vincent, Nigel: Compound Periphrasis: Syntax or Morphology?
