Full Title: 4th International Language in the Media Conference Date: 06-Jun-2011 - 08-Jun-2011 Location: Limerick, Ireland Contact Person: Helen Kelly-Holmes Meeting Email: helen.kelly.holmes ul.ie Linguistic Field(s): Sociolinguistics Other Specialty: Media Linguistics Call Deadline: 01-Oct-2010 Meeting Description: This is the fourth in a series of international conferences organized around the role of the media in relation to the representation, construction and/or production of language. The first two conferences were held at Leeds University, England: in 2005, Language in the Media: Representations, Identities, Ideologies, and, in 2007, Language Ideologies and Media Discourse: Texts, Practices, Policies. The third conference moved to Seattle in the USA for a focus on Language in the New Media: Technologies and Ideologies in September 2009. The fourth conference will be held at the University of Limerick, Ireland with the focus on Language(?) in the Media(?): Rethinking the Field. Keynote speakers Mike Cormack (Sabhal Mòr Ostaigh, UK) Nikolas Coupland (Cardiff University, UK) Sari Pietikäinen (University of Jyväskylä, Finland) Kathryn Woolard (University of California, San Diego, USA) Call For Papers 4th International Language in the Media Conference Language(?) in the Media(?): Rethinking the Field Monday 6th to Wednesday 8th June 2011, University of Limerick, Ireland Conference Theme Following on from the previous three conferences, the fourth language in the media conference seems like a good occasion to take stock of our focus and revisit some of our basic concepts. Given the mundanity of media as an unremarkable and integrated part of everyday life, does it still make sense to delineate particular domains and activities as 'media'? Similarly, given the inherent multimodality of contemporary media and the continuing deconstruction of 'language' as a monolithic concept within sociolinguistics, can and should we continue to mark out and focus on a particular set of practices as 'language', and if so, how? With these questions in mind, we invite you to submit abstracts for papers which explore the representation, construction and/or production of language in the media, but in a way which questions and problematises both 'language' and 'media'. One particular area which seems to be ripe for this type of rethinking is that of minority languages and media, and given the location of the conference in Ireland and the interests of the local organisers, we would like to call in particular for papers which address this topic in an innovative and paradigm-shifting way. Alongside this particular focus, the 2011 conference will continue to prioritize papers which address the following types of contexts/issues: standard languages and language standards; literacy policy and literacy practices; language acquisition; multilingualism and cross-/inter-cultural communication; language and communication in professional contexts; language and class, dis/ability, race/ethnicity, gender/sexuality and age; media representations of speech, thought and writing; language and education; political discourse; language, commerce and global capitalism. Abstract submission Please submit abstracts for papers (20 minutes plus 10 for discussion) by email to helen.kelly.holmes ul.ie no later than Friday 1st October 2010. Abstracts should include a title, your contact details (name, mailing address, email) and a description of your paper (250 -350 words). The conference committee will begin reviewing abstract submissions immediately after the deadline; notification of acceptance will be Monday 1st November 2010. (Please send your abstract as a Word document or in the body of your email.) Programme, registration details etc. to follow Please direct any queries to helen.kelly.holmes ul.ie
