We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate. In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have taken the trouble to respond to the query. To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at http://linguistlist.org/LL/posttolinguist.cfm.

I am doing research for a Linguistics of the Tibeto Burman Area (LTBA) article on palatalization in the Yonghe subdialect of Qiang. This particular dialect has both voiced and voiceless alveolo-palatal fricatives /ɕ,ʑ/ as well as corresponding palatal fricatives /ç,ʝ/. These sounds are very similar sounding and have a close proximity of place of articulation. I was wondering if there are any other languages described as having phonemic palatal and alveolo-palatal fricatives? In addition, I believe that Yonghe's innovation of palatal fricatives is the result of older velar fricatives being influenced by high front vowels and am trying to find parallel instances of similar occurrences in other languages. I am living in Chengdu China and have limited access to resources on other languages and any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you very much, Nate Sims
