The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies Associate Professor in Cross-Cultural Studies The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is the largest government-funded tertiary institution in Hong Kong in terms of student number. It offers programmes at Doctorate, Master's, Bachelor's degrees and Higher Diploma levels. It has a full-time academic staff strength of around 1,400. The total consolidated expenditure budget of the University is in excess of HK$4 billion per year. The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies is strong in Applied Language Studies. It offers bachelor, master, and doctoral programmes in Translating & Interpreting, Bilingual Corporate Communication, Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Teaching, and Teaching Chinese as a second language. The appointee will be required to (a) engage in teaching and related learning activities in Cross-Cultural Communication, and/or on Cultural Studies topics such as language & culture, language & identity, culture & thought, and global issues in cultural communication; (b) take up an important role in curriculum design and development; (c) undertake scholarly research in his/her area of expertise; and (d) provide administrative support for academic and departmental affairs. Applicants should have (a) a PhD degree in a relevant discipline, such as Anthropology, Anthropological Linguistics, Cross-Cultural Communication and Cultural Studies; (b) at least five years' experience in teaching Inter-cultural Communication and Cultural studies, especially in teaching Chinese culture in a foreign context; (c) effective classroom teaching skills in English or some other supplementary languages; (d) track record of research and publications; (e) native or near native mastery of Chinese, with fluency in a western language other than English being an advantage; (f) a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and professional service; and (g) working experience in Greater China and the West. Remuneration and Conditions of Service: Salary offered will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointment will be made on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract for twenty-four months. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. Remuneration package will be highly competitive.
