Description:
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of New Mexico seeks applicants for an assistant professor rank faculty appointment in Portuguese, pending budgetary approval, with field of specialization open. The appointment will be in a probationary position leading to a tenure decision. The new faculty member will join a dynamic program with emphasis on Brazilian Portuguese and Cultural Studies, which collaborates with the Latin American & Iberian Institute (LAII), a Title-VI/NRC. Appointment begins August 2011. Responsibilities include graduate and undergraduate teaching in area of specialization, and advanced culture and language courses, mentoring graduate students, sharing in the coordination of Portuguese program, and other departmental and university service. Competitive salary, commensurate with qualifications of successful applicant. For best consideration, apply by December 2, 2010. Position open until filled. Minimum Qualifications: PhD in hand by Spring 2011 in Portuguese or Linguistics or an equivalent, with a primary specialization in any field of Luso-Brazilian literary, linguistic, or cultural studies. Preferred Qualifications: Specialization in Afro-Brazilian Studies, Luso-African Studies or Portuguese Linguistics; ability to teach with a broader Latin American or Transatlantic focus, and mentor students in the Latin American Studies program; excellence in scholarship in area of specialization; excellence in teaching at the university level; native or near-native fluency and ability to teach in Portuguese and English.
