Full Title: Dispositions, Abilities and States Short Title: GENIUS II Date: 24-Jun-2010 - 25-Jun-2010 Location: Paris, France Contact Person: Alda Mari Meeting Email: AbilityConference gmail.com Web Site: http://www.genericity.ens.fr/index2.html Linguistic Field(s): Pragmatics; Semantics; Syntax Call Deadline: 01-Apr-2010 Meeting Description: Genericity: Interpretation and Uses II Dispositions, Abilities and States ENS PARIS 29, rue d'Ulm, Paris Amphitéâtre Jules Ferry June 24th-25th, 2010 Invited Speakers Claire Beyssade (IJN, CNRS/ENS/EHESS) Greg Carlson (University of Rochester) Valentine Hacquard (University of Maryland) Graham Katz (Georgetown University) Brenda Laca (University of Paris VIII) Giorgio Magri (IJN, CNRS/ENS/EHESS) Louise McNally (University of Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona) Call for Papers The workshop aims to gather linguists (from the areas of morphology, syntax and semantics) and philosophers around the notions of abilities and dispositions as central aspects of genericity, across languages and grammatical categories. Priority will be given to contributions clearly articulating empirical and formal issues. (A) It will consider the distinction between different types of states, readdressing the distinction between individual level and stage level predicates in light of recent criticism that has been leveled against it. A closely related issue that will be discussed is whether one should posit a Davidsonian argument for (verb) predicates across the board (no matter what the actional type of the predicate) or rather for eventive predicates only. (B) The issue of different types of abilities will be discussed. In particular, the workshop will consider (among others): - the question whether one should distinguish between general abilities and action-dependent, short-lived abilities and occasions; and how this distinction is grounded in the lexicon and in the syntax, - the questions whether abilities and dispositions are one and the same notion or whether only one of these requires instantiations, - the relation between habituality, occasions and dispositions (as revealed by adverbial expressions, when clauses, the aspectual system, ... ). (C) The workshop will explore the relationship between abilities and aspect: how aspectual distinctions relate to ontological distinctions between types of abilities, and to the issue whether actual instantiations are required. (D) The workshop will discuss the relation between abilities and modal expressions. It will address the question of the relation between the abilitative interpretation of modality and the deontic and epistemic interpretations. It will compare syntactic, lexical and pragmatic views on the matter. (E) Finally, the workshop will explore how abilities and dispositions surface in predicative positions, especially in languages which have bare nouns in this position or allow bare PPs (in contrast with indefinites in the same position). The non exhaustive list of topics is : - types of states in the lexicon and grammar - Davidsonian arguments - types of abilities - relation between abilities and occasions - abilities and modality: be able to ... - circumstantial modality and epistemic modality - abilities and aspect (imperfect, present perfect) Selection Committee Nicholas Asher (CNRS/Austin Texas) Claire Beyssade (Institut Jean Nicod CNRS/ENS/EHESS) Greg Carlson (University of Rochester) Francis Corblin (Paris IV Sorbonne) Fabio Del Prete (Institut Jean Nicod CNRS ENS EHESS) Carmen Dobrovie-Sorin (LLF Paris VII) Valentine Hacquard (University of Maryland) Brenda Laca (Université Paris VIII) Giorgio Magri (Institut Jean Nicod CNRS/ENS/EHESS) Alda Mari (Institut Jean Nicod CNRS ENS EHESS) Louise McNally (University of Pompeu Fabra) David Nicolas (Institut Jean Nicod CNRS/ENS/EHESS) Christopher Piñón (Université Lille III) Isidora Stojanovic (Institut Jean Nicod CNRS ENS EHESS) Organization Committee Alda Mari (Institut Jean Nicod CNRS ENS EHESS) Fabio Del Prete (Institut Jean Nicod CNRS ENS EHESS) Abstract Submission Anonymous abstracts in pdf format not exceeding 2 pages with standard 1 inch margins on all sides, including examples, figures and references, are to be sent to AbilityConference gmail.com One single authored and a co-authored abstract can be submitted.
