While indigenous languages have interacted for centuries, more recent developments--such as increasing urbanization and economic globalization, the spread of the Internet, massive migration/displacement of indigenous populations, and the appearance of pan-indigenous political movements--have given rise to new contexts and channels of inter-group contact among indigenous language speakers. Specific regional developments, such as the reservation system in North America and intensified colonization/development of the Amazon region, have also created new inter-ethnic spaces where speakers of different indigenous languages may encounter each other. This special issue will focus on the social causes and sociolinguistic consequences of such contact. Submissions may be in English, Spanish, French or Portuguese, and should be data-driven rather than purely theoretical or speculative. There are no restrictions with regard to geographic area of focus, but submissions should focus on recent or contemporary situations (20th-21stc.), rather than on earlier historical data. Articles written by (or in collaboration with) indigenous language speakers are especially encouraged. Book reviews will also be considered. Contributors should send an abstract of 150-200 words to aurolyn2yahoo.com by Dec. 15th, 2010. Authors of selected abstracts will be notified by Jan. 15th and invited to send full manuscripts by March 31st, 2011. A pesar de las muchas investigaciones realizadas sobre las influencias mútuas entre lenguas coloniales y las 'colonizadas,' existe hasta la fecha poca atención al contacto post-colonial entre diferentes lenguas indígenas. Por cierto, dichas lenguas han estado en contacto durante siglos; sin embargo, desarrollos recientes--como la urbanización, la globalización, la difusión del Internet, la migración y/o el desplazamiento de poblaciones indígenas, y el surgimiento de movimientos pan-indígenas--han generado nuevos contextos y vías de contacto entre hablantes indígenas de distincto orígen.
