Job Rank: Assistant/Associate/Senior Faculty Research Scientists
Specialty Areas: Language Assessment
Description:
The University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) is seeking faculty research scientists from the field of Language Assessment to work in its interdisciplinary research program investigating foreign/second language acquisition, aptitude, maintenance, and enhancement by government language professionals. The successful candidate will work with or lead multidisciplinary teams on research projects that enable government personnel to improve their workplace performance using their foreign languages. Current projects include research and development of innovative aptitude tests (selection, profiling, and aptitude-by-treatment interaction) and the launching of a major effort in sustainment and enhancement of foreign language ability over the whole career span of a foreign language professional. Appointments to CASL are as members of the research faculty of the University of Maryland under renewable three-year contracts, with competitive (12-month) salary commensurate with experience, and benefits. Qualifications: Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Language Assessment, Measurement Statistics and Design, or a related field, and should possess a strong record of research achievement in language testing projects. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to tackle complex, interdisciplinary research and to work collaboratively with a range of institutions and researchers. Ideal candidates will have interests that complement CASL's strategic partners on campus (such as Measurement Statistics and Design, Second Language Acquisition, Linguistics, or Psychology). Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship and already have, or be willing to obtain, the appropriate security clearance. CASL, established in 2003, is the nation's 10th university-affiliated research center. Its mission is to conduct state-of-the-science research that results in improved performance on language tasks relevant to the work of government language professionals. Our research focuses on improving knowledge of less commonly taught languages; enhancing the acquisition and maintenance of foreign language capability by government professionals; advancing the capacity to use foreign language skills in a government profession; and improving the quality of human language technology. Application: For earliest consideration, apply online by going to the application URL below and clicking on "Faculty." You will need to create an account and submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and three writing samples. References will later be requested from short-listed candidates. The position will remain open until a suitable candidate is selected. The University of Maryland is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. Questions about this position should be sent by e-mail to the email address below. In addition, CASL will be at the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) annual meeting in January.
Application Deadline: Open until filled.
