MERIDIUM (Multilingualism in Europe as a Resource for Immigration Dialogue Initiative among the Universities of the Mediterranean) is an international three-year project aimed at studying multilingualism in Mediterranean Europe. The project aims to be a reference point for the scientific community, for institutional agencies at a local and national level, for ONG agencies and immigrants associations, which can be in turn a reference point in documenting local practices. You can visit the website at http://meridium.unistrapg.it/?q=en and subscribe Meridium newsletter at http://meridium.unistrapg.it/?q=en/category/newsletter/meridiumunistrapgit-newsletter We intend to study the correlation between linguistic and educational policies and the development/diffusion of awareness towards multilingualism and linguistic diversity, with the aim of producing to create an integrated evaluation and of identifying to identify the relevant indicators. The main goals of the Project are: 1.To investigate, in countries where ongoing immigration/emigration fluxes are observed, the level of awareness of, and the attitudes towards the presence of other languages in the everyday life context, among local population and migrants. 2.To describe and evaluate linguistic policies adopted in each country, at a national and/or local level, in order to obtain favourable conditions for the linguistic integration of immigrant people. 3.To create a Study and Documentation Center about Multilingualism in Mediterranean Europe, hosted by the University for Foreigners of Perugia. The MERIDIUM project launched in 2009 is supported by a network of seven European Universities: Babeş-Bolyai Cluj-Napoca University, Brasov University, Primorska University, Malta University, Lisbon Universidade Nova, Salamanca University and Perugia University for Foreigners, which coordinates the Project. The six countries involved in the Project, Italy, Republic of Malta, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, display different demolinguistic situations and different migratory profiles: data pertaining to each national context will be collected to draw useful comparisons between policies concerning the linguistic integration of migrants. At the beginning of the project, a Quality Control Board composed by international experts has been appointed in order to assess quality standards. This project has been funded with support from the European Commission (Lifelong learning programme).
