University of Aberdeen School of Language and Literature Research Assistant/Research Fellow in Software Development/Humanities Computing Language and Linguistic Evidence in the 1641 Depositions In support of a major multidisciplinary Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project Language and Linguistic Evidence in the 1641 Depositions, led by Dr. Barbara Fennell, we are seeking a Research Assistant or Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Software Development/Humanities Computing. You will work with the Principal Investigator (PI) and a team of other linguists, computer specialists and historians to further develop and analyze a digitized corpus of quasi-legal statements from witnesses to the 1641 rebellion in Ireland. Consulting with Humanities Computing experts in Dublin, the postholder will develop facility with IBM LanguageWare™, and will work with the PI and Early Modern English Research Fellow to develop the ontologies needed to manipulate the digital corpus in order to be able to interrogate it about the nature of the language represented within it (for interpretation by historical linguists, dialect and text analysis specialists and cultural, political and social historians). The postholder will then proceed to help develop an interactive research site for use by linguists, historians and lay inquirers. To be appointed as a Research Fellow you must hold a PhD in a relevant computer science discipline, or to be appointed as a Research Assistant you must hold a Master's degree plus the appropriate level of experience that demonstrates the required skills and capabilities. You should have demonstrated expertise in java programming, databases, XML, and have a strong understanding of modern web technologies. You will be disciplined, but creative and innovative, and motivated by the creation of transformative research technology. A flair for user interface design and visualization techniques would be prove advantageous. A Research Fellow will be appointed at the appropriate point of Grade 6-7 scale (£29,853 - £36,715 per annum), and a Research Assistant will be appointed at the appropriate point of the Grade 5 scale (£25,001 - £28,139 per annum).
