The event is open to the public. The symposium provides an opportunity for interdisciplinary dialogue on the interconnected study of language, culture, communication, and technology. Three scholars present and lead discussions on the transformative relationships among language, technology, and mass media. The speakers are: 1. Prof. Richard Sproat (Center for Spoken Language Understanding, Oregon Health and Science University), who will discuss 'Language Technology, and Society'; 2. Prof. Amit Ray (Department of English, Rochester Institute of Technology), who will present 'Wikipedia in Translation: Writing Worlds in Commons'; and 3. Prof. Tej K. Bhatia (Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics, Syracuse University), who will talk about 'Bilingual Creativity, Multiple Mixing, and Global Advertising.' The symposium is sponsored by the Rochester Institute of Technology College of Liberals Arts; B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences; The English Language Center; and The Department of English. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $67,000.
