Meeting Description:
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Manchester International Postgraduate Linguistics Conference and its second year as a collaborative conference between postgraduates at the University of Manchester and the University of Salford. The standing and reputation of the conference – the longest-running of its kind in the United Kingdom – is reflected in the support we have received in previous years from the Linguistics Association of Great Britain, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and the UKGrad programme.
The theme of this year's conference reflects changing trends in academic research which highlight the strength of interdisciplinary approaches to issues in science and the humanities. Linguistics has long been at the forefront of such investigation, and this conference seeks to promote discourse between traditionally divergent sub-disciplines of linguistics in finding solutions to issues of theoretical importance. The theme will help postgraduate researchers to focus on developing effective methodologies for their own research as well as familiarising them with other approaches to linguistic research.
Call for Papers:
Abstract Submission:
We invite abstracts to be submitted by 1st July 2011 to plcmanchester.ac.uk. Abstracts should be 250 words (excluding references) or less and be sent, anonymously, as an attachment to the e-mail. The e-mail message should contain your name, affiliation and the qualification towards which you are currently working. Please clearly indicate how your paper contributes to the general theme. Furthermore, please let us know whether you would like to give an oral or a poster presentation. Successful entrants will be notified by 1st August 2011.
Presentation Guidelines:
Presentations will be allocated 30 minutes (20 minutes presentation and 10 minutes for questions). Dedicated poster sessions will take place throughout the conference.
Submissions may include:
- Studies involving more than one sub-discipline or field in linguistics. These include, but are not limited to, the semantics-pragmatics interface, issues in morphosyntax, sociophonology/sociophonetics, language and cognitive science, and linguistic studies of language change.
- The application of theories and/or methodologies from other disciplines, which have not always been associated with linguistics, to linguistic studies or theoretical issues. Methodologies could include corpus-based approaches, qualitative field methods, or other approaches which illuminate issues in linguistic theory.
This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $67,000. This money will go to help
keep the List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.
