Meeting Description:

CALPIU'12 is the second open conference arranged by the CALPIU Research Centre for the Study of Cultural and Linguistic Practices in the International University. The aim of CALPIU'12 is to discuss various aspects of the consequences of transnational student mobility.

Student mobility makes necessary both cultural and linguistic accommodation and learning processes. We are witnessing a huge increase in the learning of languages to be used as lingua francas by academic teachers and students, not least English the 'language of globalization'.

However, forces of localization, too, are manifest at every university trying to adopt internationalization strategies, the tension between the global and the local - uniformity and diversification - creating a multidimensional space for new kinds of cultural and linguistic hybridity to flourish.

There is a new open-mindedness regarding the roles and identities of self and others, leading to new patterns of linguistic/interactive, educational and social practices. We aim to further the theoretical understanding of these processes, those of active and receptive multilingualism, as well as language alternation in interaction.

Round Table:

In addition to the keynote speakers, the conference will feature a round table of invited speakers who will present and discuss various approaches to multilingualism in the international university. The panelists are:

Call for Papers:

Deadline for submission: 16 August, 2011

Proposals are invited for individual papers (200-250 words) and should be submitted for refereeing by August 16, 2011. This includes contributions to pre-arranged panels.

Papers that are not submitted as part of pre-arranged panels will be arranged into thematically coherent panels by the conference organizers. The thematic panels will be issued with a panel chair (not just a session chair) and the panelists will be asked to coordinate their presentations before the conference. Panels will be organized in slots of either 90 or 120 minutes and will typically consist of 3 or 4 papers.

Topics for Panels and Papers:

We welcome all proposals that address the general conference theme.

The following list is provided as inspiration for topics that could potentially be addressed under the headings of cultural and linguistic practices in the international university and transnational student mobility in higher education:

- Multilingualism in higher education
- Teaching and learning in 'another language'
- Lingua francas in higher education
- Interactional competence in the international university
- Transnational mobility and local languages
- Cultural reflexivity and intercultural dynamics
- Social life in a multilingual institutional context
- Institutional roles and authenticity
- Language policy and ideology
- Collecting and working with multilingual data and corpora
- Methods for studying linguistic and cultural diversity

All these topics can be dealt with from the perspective of the four fields of practice in the international university that CALPIU investigates:

- The communicative practice and self-conception of the university as an actor in a multilingual world
- Student-teacher interactions
- Student-student interactions
- Student-Administrative staff interactions

Author Guidelines:

Abstracts of all individual papers (200-250 words incl. references if any) should be submitted for refereeing by August 16, 2011. This includes contributions to pre-arranged panels (cf. above). Individual abstracts should not disclose the name(s) of author(s).

Please keep references to an absolute minimum. If you include references, please format them according to the guidelines contained in The Unified Stylesheet for Linguistics, found on the CALPIU12.dk website.

About the CALPIU Research Centre:

The CALPIU research centre was initiated by a group of researchers within sociolinguistics, conversation analysis, discourse, and communication analysis at Roskilde University, Denmark. It now links more than 50 senior and junior researchers from 23 universities and research centers in Denmark, other Nordic countries (Finland, Norway and Sweden), and beyond (Australia, China, India, Japan, Spain, and UK).

The CALPIU research centre focuses on the function of language in social and cultural practice in the international university, especially the significance of language proficiency and language choice within a context marked by the development of power relations and hierarchies of influence. It also considers the significance of these power relations and hierarchies of influence vis-à-vis the organization, didactics, learning processes and academic content of educational programs in the humanities and social and natural sciences.

CALPIU is funded by the Danish Council for Independent Research, Humanities.
