L'objectif de ce colloque est d'inviter à une réflexion autant sur la méthodologie adoptée en amont, que sur la finalité des classements, en passant par le choix et la pertinence des critères retenus. Notre souhait est ainsi de réunir des jeunes chercheurs (doctorants et jeunes docteurs) en Sciences du Langage, autour de questions transversales : Pourquoi classer ? Comment classer ? Que classe-t-on ? Dans quels buts ? Que faire de ce qui n'est pas ‘classable’ ? Classifications in Linguistics: Methodology, Problems, Challenges This conference is organized by Ph.D. students of the team Linguistique, Langues, Parole (LiLPa, UR 1339, University of Strasbourg, France) and Ph.D. students from the Institute of Romance Philology (Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany). The aim of this conference is to provide a basis for a reflexion on upstream methodological issues as well as the implications of such classifications, including the choices and the relevance of the selected criteria. Therefore, our wish is to assemble young researchers in linguistics (Ph.D. students and Post- Docs) to discuss transversal questions: Why do we classify? How do we classify? What do we classify? For which purpose do we classify? How do we deal with non-classifiable items? Appel à Communications: L'activité de classification fait partie intégrante de la démarche scientifique. En linguistique, au-delà des questions concernant la typologie des langues, classer pose des problèmes et implique des enjeux à tous les niveaux de l'analyse. Une grande attention sera accordée aux communications qui contribueront à développer une réflexion à propos des problématiques suivantes : - L'établissement des catégories : a priori (les catégories étant préétablies) ou a posteriori (les catégories découlant des faits observés) - Les relations entre les catégories : possibilités, modalités et interest d'établir des continuums - Les critères à prendre en compte pour décider de l'appartenance d'un élément à une catégorie - L'articulation entre les critères retenus et les objectifs visés - Réflexion métalinguistique : différence entre catégorisation, classification, typologie - Toute autre proposition en accord avec le thème du colloque Ce colloque sera l'occasion de réunir des jeunes chercheurs, en leur offrant la possibilité de présenter leurs travaux respectifs, d'échanger, de croiser leurs regards et expériences. Il s'agit avant tout d'une rencontre autour d'une problématique transversale - celle des classifications dans les études du langage. Organisé sans privilégier une école ou orientation théorique particulière, chaque domaine peut y trouver sa place. Les candidats seront attentifs à proposer une communication accessible aux non-spécialistes de leur domaine, de manière à ce que l'échange profite à tous. L'objectif étant en effet que la réflexion menée dans un domaine spécifique constitue un apport fructueux pour l'ensemble de la communauté. In linguistics, beyond questions concerning language typology, classifying raises many different problems and includes challenges on every level of analysis. Special attention will be attributed to talks that focus on one of the following set of problems: - The establishment of categories: a priori (pre-established categories) or a posteriori (categories that can be derived from observed facts) - The relations between categories: possibilities, modalities and concerns to establish a continuum - Criteria that have to be considered to decide the affiliation of an item to a certain category - The link between the retained criteria and the aspired aims - Metalinguistic considerations: differences between categorization, classification, typology - All other propositions in accord with the topic of the conference This meeting will be an opportunity for young researchers to present their recent work, cross perspectives and experiences. Primarily, we aim to organize a conference about a transversal set of problems - the classification in linguistics. The organizers do not favor a particular school of thought or any theoretical orientations. Any related field or subfield of research can possibly be accepted. We ask the applicants to hand in a talk that is accessible to non-specialists of the research field to allow an open discussion and exchange. The intention is to hold efficient reflections on specific research fields and to constitute a productive contribution.
