Meeting Description:

Adjectives in Germanic and Romance: Variation and Change
29 March - 30 March, 2012
Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam (ACLC)

Although the Germanic and Romance languages are two branches of the same language family and both have developed the adjective as a separate morphological and syntactic category, the syntax and semantics of adjectives is by no means the same in these two language groups. The goal of this conference is to map the differences and similarities in meaning and syntactic behavior of the Germanic and Romance adjective, and to find an answer to the question: are the (dis)similarities the result of autonomous development in each of the two branches of the Indo-European language family or are they caused by language contact.

Invited Speakers:

Guglielmo Cinque (Università Ca' Foscari Venezia)
Frans Plank (Universität Konstanz)

Call for Papers:

Topics to be discussed at the conference may include (but are not limited to) the following:

- Predicative vs. attributive adjectives
- Adjectival positions
- Adjectival agreement
- Weak and strong adjectives
- Relational adjectives
- Functional adjectives
- Gradable vs. non-gradable adjectives
- Superlatives

Abstracts are invited for 30 minute talks (20+10) relevant to the conference theme. Submissions are limited to one single-authored and one joint-authored abstract. The abstracts should be sent by e-mail to variation-change-fgwuva.nl no later than 16 December 2011.

Abstracts should be anonymous both in the body of the text and the file name and should not exceed two A4 pages with a 2.5cm margin on each side and in 12 pt font. A second document (in a separate file) should be submitted with the title of the paper and name(s), affiliation(s), and preferred contact details of the author(s).
