The following article is in remembrance of Rev. Eugene Nida, who passed away on August 25, 2011 at the age of 96. Nida was a pioneer in translation for both religious and secular texts. Using his linguistic background and cultural sensitivity, he established the 'functional equivalence' approach for translation in order to make the Bible accessible in 200 different languages. His absence will be keenly felt by linguists, biblical scholars, and the communities he impacted worldwide.
