Department of English: 6th International Conference Theme: English and the Distinctly African University University of Botswana 1st – 3rd June, 2011 Since 1998 the Department of English in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Botswana has been hosting a biennial conference to discuss issues concerning English language and literature in Africa. The 2011 conference, English and the Distinctly African University, will provide a platform for researchers, academics, educators, language planners, literary scholars, theatre practitioners and other professionals in Africa and elsewhere to debate the role of English in defining African universities.
2nd Call for Papers: Since 1998 the Department of English in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Botswana has been hosting a biennial conference to discuss issues concerning English language and literature in Africa. The 2011 conference, English and the Distinctly African University, will provide a platform for researchers, academics, educators, language planners, literary scholars, theatre practitioners and other professionals in Africa and elsewhere to debate the role of English in defining African universities. The suggested subthemes are: -Contact between English and African Oral Traditions -English and African Languages -Role of language, Literature and Theatre in Conflict Management and -Resolution -Pan African Approach to the teaching of Language, Literature and Theatre -Language, Literature, Theatre and the Environment -Re-thinking English in Africa -Theatre, Language and Politicking in Africa -Theatre, Language and Development in Africa -Language, Gender and Technology -Botswana English and the New Millennium -English in Parliamentary and Legal Discourse The department hopes that dialogue around such issues will contribute to better understanding of the role of English in defining African universities, the contact zone between English and African Languages and Traditions; the role of language, literature and theatre in conflict management and resolution; and other related issues such as the use of language in politicking, development and parliamentary discourse. Submission of Abstracts Abstracts of not more than 250 words on any of the above themes and sub-themes should be submitted via email to: ndanan mopipi.ub.bw and elleces mopipi.ub.bw . Abstracts must be Microsoft Word documents and must be submitted electronically only. In case Abstracts make use of any specialized characters or diacritics, such abstracts should be sent in PDF format. The deadline for submission is 10th March, 2011. Abstracts should include: -Title of paper -Conference theme and sub-theme addressed -Name(s) and academic title(s) of author(s) -Academic or professional affiliation -E-mail address -Number of words in the abstract Abstracts are considered and responded to as they are submitted.
