In August of 2011, the administration of the Indian state of West Bengal voted to change the official name to "West Bengal" in Bengali. The problem is there is no convenient way (yet) to represent this in publications in English, or in any other language other than Bengali, which requires transliteration of some sort.
Already in the media we see variants such as Paschim Banga, Poshchim Bangla, Poshchim Bongo... etc.
Transliteration has always been an imperfect art, but this blogger Antariksh Botale wonders if there are any alternatives.
