The International Conference 'The Voices of Suspense and their Translation in Thrillers' (VSTT) aims to study fictional dialogue and its translation in suspense novels and films and in related genres. The particular interest in dialogue comes from the host of roles it plays in fiction. It helps create suspense and arouses a whole range of feelings related to the development and dénouement of the plot in the reader or the audience.
Moreover, fictional dialogue is the discursive method to evoke orality, confer authenticity and credibility on a plot and give fictional characters a voice. One of its main functions is to depict the characters, that is to say, it shapes the way they are and behave through speech, it gives their reasoning and thoughts credibility and contributes to developing their personality, distinguishing them from the others taking part in the action of the story.
As a narrative strategy, dialogue is an important resource that enables the writer to shape the characters' subjectivity. Depending on the author's preferences and the literary conventions of the time, this function can be important to varying degrees and may entail other functions, such as moving the plot along. Thus dialogue has different ways of materializing: from direct, reported or free indirect speech to internal monologue in a broad sense. In thrillers the character's voice is part of the process of creating suspense, an element of uncertainty, anxiety and excitement, which is not exclusive to this genre. To clearly differentiate it from the tension created by other types of fiction, this conference aims to study the relationship between the characters' voices and the building of suspense and to describe the translation difficulties arising from this particular interdependence.
So attention is focused on the translation of genres and subgenres, such as detective, terror and police procedural novels, as well as the different subtypes of thriller (political, legal, psychological). The conference also aims to study fictional dialogue in the different modalities of audiovisual translation, especially the dubbing and subtitling of films, TV series, adaptations and remakes, as well as the videogames that belong to the suspense genre.

Call for Papers:
We welcome proposals for conference papers (20 minutes maximum) and posters.
The submission of a 250-word anonymous abstract for papers and a 150-word anonymous abstract for posters (in English only or in English and Spanish) should be accompanied by a separate document including the following information:
1. First name and surname of the author of the paper
2. Postal address
3. E-mail address
4. Academic institution
5. Title of the paper
Deadline for submission: April 18, 2012
Notification of acceptance will be sent to participants: June 11, 2012
Deadline for the submission of the final version of the papers, which will be assessed by the Scientific Committee: December 10, 2012
Notification of acceptance of the paper as a chapter for the book compiled from the conference: January 14, 2013
Accepted contributions will have 20 minutes for presentation and 10 additional minutes for discussion. Posters will be displayed during the conference. A time slot (of 20 minutes approx.) will be set aside for participants' questions and discussion of the posters with their authors.
