Description:
The University of Edinburgh seeks to fill the vacancy in the Forbes Chair of English Language created by the departure of Professor April McMahon to take up the Vice-Chancellorship of the University of Aberystwyth. The Chair, which was established in 1948 with Professor Angus McIntosh as its first incumbent, is devoted to linguistic theory in relation to English and its history. Linguistics and English Language is one of three subject areas in the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, the University of Edinburgh was shown to have produced 30% of all the top rated work (categories 4 and 5) in linguistics within the UK, and in 2011 it figured in the world top ten for linguistics in the QS ranking. The appointee to the Forbes Chair will be a world-renowned scholar with an active programme of research in his or her particular area of specialisation. We shall look to him or her to contribute distinguished academic leadership in research, supervision and teaching at all levels.
