Description:

Newcastle University offers some funding for doctoral study in linguistics
(http://www.ncl.ac.uk/linguistics):

1) At least one three-year AHRC studentship in linguistics. Further information,
inclucing on how to apply, is available at
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate/funding/search/list/ahrc-doc-ling. Deadline
for applications is 1 March 2012.

2) ESRC doctoral studentships as part of the North-East Doctoral Training Centre
(DTC). There is no set number for linguistics; rather, applications across the
social sciences, including linguistics, will be ranked by the DTC. Further
information, including on how to apply, is available at
http://www.nedtc.ac.uk/studentships.aspx. Deadline for applications is 24
February 2012.

The division of labour between ESRC and AHRC as regards linguistics is the
following: AHRC supports research into the structure, history, theory and
description of language and languages. This includes the development and
exploration of theories of language, the elucidation of the historical
development of languages and the production of descriptions of languages or
features of languages. ESRC supports research in areas of computational
linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and interdisciplinary social
science research involving linguistics. Both Councils also fund research into
phonetics and applied linguistics relating to the areas for which they are
responsible.

Both research councils impose the same residency requirements, namely:
candidates must be UK/EU citizens; EU candidates who have not lived in the UK
for at least three years are eligible only for exemption of fees, as opposed to
a full maintenance grant.

Applications Deadline: 24-Feb-2012
