Description:
The University of Tromsø currently has a vacant research fellow position for an applicant who wants to pursue a PhD degree in theoretical and/or experimental linguistics. The successful applicant will propose a research project that is compatible with ongoing work at CASTL (see URL above). The Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics (CASTL) is a Norwegian Center of Excellence funded by the Research Council of Norway and the University of Tromsø. The core scientific group of the center currently consists of 6 senior researchers, 9 postdocs/researchers and 17 PhD students. CASTL's primary research activity is within generative grammar with a focus on syntax, phonology, and language acquisition. CASTL also runs a Graduate School. The person hired in the advertised position is expected to follow the program of the Graduate School and to complete a doctoral dissertation. A more detailed plan for coursework, research, and teaching will be developed by the employee together with the Graduate School Coordinator shortly after appointment. The PhD study is standardized to three years. The fourth year consists of teaching or other duties for the university, organized according to a distribution formula of 25% per year. The successful applicant will have to document qualifications in theoretical and/or experimental linguistics at the Master's level. Applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The main emphasis of the assessment will be on the applicant's potential for research, as evident from: Master's thesis or equivalent, other scholarly works and project description. Work experience and teaching qualifications as well as administrative and organizational experience will also be plus. Any relevant information must be submitted along with the application.
