Description:
ESRC PhD studentships in the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Manchester: Linguistics Pathway As part of the University of Manchester, Linguistics and English Language is now a member of the ESRC's North West Doctoral Training College (DTC). The North West DTC receives the largest number of ESRC PhD studentships in England, and applications are now open to candidates wishing to undertake a PhD within the Linguistics Pathway of the NWDTC. Successful applicants will benefit from joint training provision with Lancaster. Applicants must have an offer of a place on one of the following doctoral programmes before they can be considered for an ESRC DTC studentship in our School: *PhD in Linguistics and English Language. This is a +3 (three-year) programme for those with a prior Masters. *Integrated MA/PhD in Linguistics. This is a 1+3 (four-year) programme for those without a prior Masters in linguistics or closely related field. We welcome applicants from the UK and the EU in all ESRC-fundable areas of Linguistics and English Language, but especially in sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, experimental phonetics, and language documentation projects with a social science component. Manchester is an international centre for linguistics and English language. The department is virtually unique in the UK and beyond in the breadth of subject areas and theoretical approaches represented by its members, many of whom are internationally renowned scholars in their specialisms. Linguistics and English Language has 17 members of staff and over 25 postgraduate research students. The Research Assessment Exercise 2008 has judged more than half of Linguistics and English Language work to be in the top two research categories of 4* ('world- leading') and 3* ('internationally excellent'). Our research page at http://www.llc.manchester.ac.uk/subjects/lel/research/ provides information on the specific research interests of academic staff and links to their individual pages. How to Apply You must apply via the University's standard postgraduate application procedure (see http://www.llc.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/) by Friday 18 March 2011. Once you are in receipt of an offer, you can then apply for an ESRC DTC studentship. The deadline for the ESRC studentships is 5.00pm on 25th March 2011. Details of the ESRC application process will be made available in due course here: http://www.llc.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/funding/ Please note: you are advised to submit your PhD application to the University as early as possible, to ensure that you are in receipt of an offer in advance of the 25 March 2011 deadline. Students will be informed of the outcome of the ESRC DTC application process by the end of April 2011.
