Meeting Description:
This meeting focuses on how the temporal structure of discourse is built out of linguistic and world knowledge cues, a topic of intense research for the past couple of decades. How do grammatical elements or systems – such as tense, aspect, Aktionsart, auxiliary verbs, lexical predicates (like last or date back to), time adjuncts, and discourse connectives – interact to determine temporal information processing in natural languages? How does world knowledge – in combination with the above-mentioned grammatical elements or systems – affect the semantic interpretation? Furthermore, how does mood/modality interact with temporal information (e.g. in factual, counterfactual or hypothetical structures)? Both language-specific and contrastive studies focusing on these different types of interactions – at the sentence or at the discourse level – are welcome. Organising Committee: Ana Teresa Alves and Helena Montenegro (University of Azores, Ponta Delgada), Telmo Móia and Rui Marques (University of Lisbon), Judite Carecho (University of Coimbra). Scientific Committe: Myriam Bras (University of Toulouse), Anne Le Draoulec (University of Toulouse), Kees Hengeveld (University of Amsterdam), Graham Katz (Georgetown University), Christopher Piñon (University of Lille), Henriette de Swart (University of Utrecht). Plenary Speaker: Hans Kamp
