We can't believe our eyes. Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine such a response to Roger Shuy's sociolinguistics challenge. The aims were lofty: if sociolinguists donated $1000 between noon on Monday and noon on Wednesday, Roger Shuy would donate $500 out of his own pocket to support his subfield. We believed sociolinguists could come up with a thousand bucks; we believed they could pull ahead of syntax. But we underestimated the astounding fervor with which they would apply themselves to this challenge. Over the course of 48 hours, sociolinguists donated over $2700. TWENTY-SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS. Our socks have been knocked off.
