Dear LINGUIST List Subscribers,
Our jaws are on the floor. We can't believe our eyes. Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine such a response to Roger Shuy's sociolinguistics challenge. The aims were lofty: if sociolinguists donated $1000 between noon on Monday and noon on Wednesday, Roger Shuy would donate $500 out of his own pocket to support his subfield.
We believed sociolinguists could come up with a thousand bucks; we believed they could pull ahead of syntax. But we underestimated the astounding fervor with which they would apply themselves to this challenge.
Over the course of 48 hours, sociolinguists donated over $2700. TWENTY-SEVEN HUNDRED DOLLARS. Our socks have been knocked off. Have a look:

Obviously, this puts sociolinguistics in the lead of the Battle of the Fields, a full thousand dollars ahead of syntax. But as we've seen in the past couple of days, there's no limit to what a subfield can accomplish in 48 hours-- will syntax mount a counter-challenge and reclaim their spot at the top? We can't wait to see what happens next!
Donate now to support YOUR subfield:
