The 5th Brno Conference on Linguistics Studies in English, English as the Lingua Franca of the Modern World: New Challenges for Academia, will be held in Brno on 17-18 September 2012. As usual, the host institution will be the Department of English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Education of Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic. A detailed programme of the two-day conference will be sent after the submission of proposals. We are pleased to announce that the following keynote speakers have confirmed their participation at the Conference: Prof. Anna Mauranen, University of Helsinki, Finland Prof. Peter Grundy, University of Durham, Great Britain The full conference fee is CZK 1250 (€50) and there is a reduced fee for students of CZK 1000 (€40). The conference fee includes participation at all sessions of the conference including the workshop on academic discourse, the conference package (book of abstracts, conference programme, map of Brno, etc.), a copy of the post-conference publication, light refreshments during coffee breaks, and conference dinner on 17 September. All participants must pay their own travel and accommodation costs.
Call for Papers: The 5th Brno Conference focuses on English as the lingua franca of international communication in the globalized modern world. We welcome contributions on a wide range of linguistics topics, such as coherence and cohesion, pragmatic strategies, genre and stylistic variation in spoken and written discourse. The conference will also include a workshop focused on academic English. If you wish to attend the conference, please complete the Registration Form and return it by 30 April 2012. If you would like to offer a presentation, please send an abstract of 200 words in preferably .doc or .docx format, indicating its title on the Registration Form. The registration forms and abstracts should be sent by email to Martina Malášková (malaskom gmail.com) by 30 May 2012. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 30 June 2012. Selected contributions presented at the Conference will be published in a thematic volume or in the linguistics journal Discourse and Interaction. Authors will receive a free copy of the respective publication. All participants will receive the thematic volume. Further copies may be ordered.
