Meeting Description:

The Résumé of a Theory of Language, a posthumous work by Louis Hjelmslev, was published in 1975 in an English translation due to the efforts of F.J. Whitfield, who had access to Hjelmslev's manuscripts. The original Danish version of the Résumé remains unpublished. Two translations based on the English edition were published recently: an Italian one, under the direction of R. Galassi & C. Zorzella (Terra Ferma, 2009) and a French one, adapted for an online edition by A. Herreman (http://resume.univ-rennes1.fr/, 2010).

The colloquium Lire le Résumé d'une théorie du langage de Louis Hjelmslev is a celebration of these two new translations. It proposes to acknowledge the renewed interest in this work, which is yet today considered 'difficult' and sparsely commented. Indeed, despite being unfinished and known mainly through translations, the Résumé may still be considered the major work of Hjelmslev.

Call for Papers:

The contributors to this conference are invited to discuss the specificities of this text. The possible lines of investigations are oriented as follows:

- Genetic, philological and editorial. Mimeographed copies of the Résumé circulated among members of the Linguistic Circle of Copenhagen since 1943. This means that the text as a whole was accessible. Why then is the Résumé considered 'unfinished'?
- Hermeneutical. The Résumé is made up of a total of six 'textual categories', though only four are to be frequently found: definitions, rules, principles, notes (the last two being examples and applications). What do these 'textual categories' actually mean? What guidelines do they offer to the interpretation of the text? Can these textual categories be transposed into hypertext?
- Intertextual. The (restricted) dissemination of the Résumé is contemporary with the publication of Omkring Sprogteoriens Grundlæggelse (known to French speakers as Prolégomènes à une théorie du langage). Even if many formal and semantic relations can be made between the two texts, what conclusions may be drawn from that? In a broader sense, the connection between the Résumé and other texts by Hjelmslev (including the manuscripts and the Outline of Glossematics, published in 1957 under the single signature of H.J. Uldall) is yet to be established.
- Rhetorical and philosophical. The development of the argument in the Résumé and the Prolegomena is quite distinct, although both texts deal with the same concepts. What explains this divergence? What kind of epistemological postulates are manifested by the concepts of the theory of language?
- Methodological. The Résumé provides an analytic procedure. Does this procedure correspond to a method? If so, to which objects can it be applied? Does the Résumé provide a model that can be adapted to objects studied by contemporary semiotics?
