Service encounters, understood as contextual situations in which the 'server' has a professional role and the 'served' expects to get something from that specific service, have been widely studied from a pragmatic and interpersonal point of view in the last decades. One of the reasons lies on the fact that the communicative exchange between customer and service provider is essential for the success of the service encounter itself. In this context, the choice of the appropriate utterances, the interpretation and negotiation of the message and the interactants' expectations are influenced by countless variables.
To further explore verbal interaction in service encounters, this first symposium aims at gathering specialists in communication in service encounters from a variety of perspectives and thus create a forum of ideas and recent developments that may help not only advance in this particular context but also contribute to improve communication in professional settings and unify current studies.
For this edition, we will be honoured with the presence of Dr. María Elena Placencia (Birkbeck College, London) and Dr. Pilar Garcés-Conejos Blitvich (University of North Carolina at Charlotte) as keynote speakers.
Call for Papers:
This symposium covers - but is not limited to - works that present recent studies revolving around the context of service encounters. The event aims at providing a variety of perspectives, although studies covering cross-cultural communication, politeness and other social approaches are especially welcome. Suggested topics:
- Telephone service encounters
- Online service encounters
- Intercultural service encounters
- (Im)politeness in service encounters
- Conversational structure of service encounters
- Negotiation in service encounters
- Receptionist-guest interactions at hotels
- Communication at information desks
- Corner-shop interactions
- Reception desks in medical consultations
- Service encounters in academic contexts
- Business contexts
- Communication between service providers and customers in cross-cultural contexts
The works will be presented in the form of oral presentations in English on any of the subjects that come within the list of conference topics above or any other topic related to service encounters. These must be 20 minutes in length, followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion.
If you are interested in presenting your oral presentation, please submit your abstract (max 350 words) through our website http://www.secc-symposium.com by July 15, 2012. Proposals will be peer-reviewed and notification of acceptance will be sent by September 15.
