Description:
The Research Unit of Cognitive and Functional Linguistics at the Department of Linguistics of the University of Leuven is looking for applicants for a fully funded four-year PhD fellowship to write a dissertation on Spanish Historical Linguistics (start date: October/November 2012). The PhD project is part of a larger collaborative project (GOA/12/007) 'The Multiple Functional Load of grammatical signs in text construction and processes of language change', which is funded by the Research Council of the University of Leuven. The team of the GOA project is composed of Bert Cornillie, Kristin Davidse, Jean-Christophe Verstraete and An Van linden. The supervisor of this work package is Bert Cornillie, its co-supervisor is Freek Van de Velde. This PhD project is entitled 'Discourse status and the development of clitic doubling in Spanish' and its aim is to account for the origin and evolution of (indirect) object doubling in Spanish (e.g. Se (COI) lo (COD) dije a mi vecino (COI) 'I told it to my neighbour'). A summary of the research project can be requested by e-mail. Applications are invited from candidates with the following qualifications: - Strong analytical skills and the motivation to pursue creative work in historical linguistics. - An interest in authentic corpus data, text editions and discourse traditions. - An MA (or equivalent) in Linguistics or Philology and academic distinction. - An excellent command of Spanish and a good command of English. - A cooperative attitude and the ability to play an active role in the research group (including its weekly seminars). - The ability to present research results at international conferences, and to publish in English in peer-reviewed journals. The deadline for applications is July 15th 2012. Interviews will be held with shortlisted candidates in the second half of August (in person or online for overseas applicants). A decision will be made by the end of August. The fellow will receive a salary of approximately 1700 EUR/month (after taxes) for a period of four years and all regular provisions for PhD fellows at the University of Leuven. In addition, s/he will be allocated office space and a laptop, and receive funding for research activities like attending conferences abroad and organizing workshops and conferences in Leuven or elsewhere. The successful candidate may be asked to provide (limited) assistance with teaching, student supervision and data management.
