Description:
The Research Unit of Cognitive and Functional Linguistics at the Department of Linguistics of the University of Leuven is looking for applicants for a fully funded four-year PhD fellowship in English linguistics (starting date: October/November 2012). The PhD fellowship is part of a larger collaborative project (GOA/12/007) 'The Multiple Functional Load of grammatical signs in text construction and processes of language change', funded by the Research Council of the University of Leuven. The team supervising the project consists of Bert Cornillie, Kristin Davidse, Jean-Christophe Verstraete and An Van linden. The supervisor of this PhD is Kristin Davidse and the co-supervisor Lieselotte Brems. The PhD project will focus on factive complements of verbal predicates in English. Its aims are to identify the specific properties that characterize factive complements in contrast with complements of reported speech, and to further elucidate the essence of the factive presupposition. More information about the project can be requested by e-mail. Applications are invited from candidates with the following qualifications: - An MA in linguistics (or equivalent, e.g. BA Hons), with academic distinction. - Strong analytical skills and the motivation to pursue creative work in linguistics. - A good command of English. - A cooperative attitude and the ability to play an active role in the research group (including its weekly seminars). - The ability to present research results at international conferences, and to publish in peer-reviewed journals. Motivated candidates meeting these criteria are invited to apply online according to the instructions given at http://www.kuleuven.be/personeel/jobsite/vacancies_aapbap/phd_humanities.html Please include a cover letter, a CV, the names of up to three referees we may contact prior to appointment, and a sample piece of writing. The deadline for applications is 15 July 2012. Interviews will be held with shortlisted candidates in the second half of August (in person or online for overseas applicants). A decision will be made by the end of August. The fellow will receive a salary of approximately € 1,700 per month (after taxes) for a period of four years and all regular provisions for PhD fellows at the University of Leuven. In addition, s/he will be allocated office space and a laptop, and receive funding for research activities like attending conferences abroad and organizing workshops and conferences in Leuven or elsewhere. The successful candidate will be asked to provide some assistance with teaching in the English Linguistics programme. S/he will join a dynamic research team consisting of six faculty members, several postdoctoral fellows and many PhD students.
