Description:
ESRC funded PhD Studentship in Computational Linguistics This studentship is attached to an ESRC Professorial Fellowship on the Probabilistic Representation of Linguistic Knowledge recently awarded to Shalom Lappin in the Department of Philosophy, King's College London. It will be held in the Department of Philosophy at King's, in the Linguistics PhD program. It will start on October 1, 2012 and run for three years until September 30, 2015. The PhD student's research will address the connection between the stochastic modeling of syntactic knowledge (linguistic competence generally), and the probabilistic representation of knowledge in other cognitive domains. He/she will consider the relationship between probabilistic learning models and stochastic representations of the target class of learning. He/she will be encouraged to write an innovative dissertation on the central theoretical issues in cognitive modeling that drive the project. He/she will co-author project papers and attend conferences. The student will receive training in core theoretical and implementational aspects of computational linguistics and natural language processing. He/she will be introduced to current issues in cognitive science, particularly as these bear on the concerns of the project. Full ESRC studentship support (annual stipend of £15,590 plus home/EU tuition fees) is normally available only to students who (a) have been ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom for the previous three years; (b) other than citizens of European Union countries, whose residence during that period has not been wholly or mainly for the purposes of full-time education; and (c) who have permission to reside permanently in the United Kingdom. EU students who do not meet the above criteria may be eligible for a fees only studentship. Potential applicants who are uncertain as to their eligibility should contact Jennie Eldridge (jennie.eldridge kcl.ac.uk). The studentship will be associated with the Language, Media & Culture (LMC) framework within King's Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Doctoral Training Centre (KISS-DTC), which is an ESRC approved Doctoral Training Centre for Theme 10. One of the components of the LMC framework is Language, Discourse, and Communication. Candidates should have a strong MA (or equivalent degree) in linguistics, philosophy, computer science, or cognitive science. Interested applicants should send a full CV, three letters of recommendation, and a letter of interest to Shalom Lappin at shalom.lappin kcl.ac.uk by August 22. Enquiries can also be sent to this email address.
