Description:
The School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor appointment in evolution, broadly interpreted. We are interested in exceptional scientists and mathematicians who have well-developed research programs employing mathematical or computational techniques to study the evolution of dynamical processes far from equilibrium in the context of any of the following: biology, chemistry, or materials from the molecular to the systems scale, language, geology, psychology, or the environment. The successful candidate's primary appointment will be in a single department in the natural sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science, Linguistics, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, or Psychology. Secondary appointments in other departments can be arranged, as appropriate. This appointment will be the first in a cluster of appointments across the natural sciences in various aspects of evolution; the successful candidate should therefore have a strong interest in building such a program and in interacting with researchers from other disciplines whose research lies within the overarching theme of evolution. The successful candidate will teach courses in his or her home department and will participate in the development of curriculum pertinent to the theme of the cluster. Applications should be submitted on-line at the application URL below and include a curriculum vitae, a research statement that includes the candidate's perspective on how she or he fits into one of the core departments, links to no more than three journal publications, and the contact information for three individuals who will be contacted by the University with instructions on how to submit a letter of recommendation. Review of applications will begin 16 November 2012 and will continue until the position is filled. The University of Pennsylvania is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer and is strongly committed to establishing a diverse faculty: http://www.upenn.edu/almanac/volumes/v58/n02/diversityplan.html
