Department Description:
The Oracle Language Technology (OLT) group develops language technology
to support search and text analysis in a variety of Oracle products. The OLT
Lexer software currently supports 21 languages, and will support at least 32
by 2013. The group has engineers to develop the software and computational
linguists to develop the language dictionaries and other data needed to
perform language analysis.
Brief Posting Description:
Manage a team that designs, develops, troubleshoots and debugs software
programs for databases, applications, tools, networks etc.
Detailed Description:
As a manager of the software engineering division, you will apply your
knowledge of software architecture to manage software development tasks
associated with developing, debugging or designing software applications,
operating systems and databases according to provided design
specifications. Build enhancements within an existing software architecture
and suggest improvements to the architecture.
Job Requirements:
- Manages and controls activities in multi-functional areas of sections
- Ensures appropriate operational planning is effectively executed to meet
Corporate specifications
- Demonstrated leadership and people management skills
- Strong communication skills, analytical skills, thorough understanding of
product development
- BS or MS degree or equivalent experience relevant to functional area.
- 4 years of software engineering or related experience
- Candidates should have in-depth knowledge and proficiency in several non-
English languages
We are seeking a Computational Linguist with technical management
experience for two complementary roles:
1) to carry out research and development related to a multi-language natural
language processing system;
2) to manage a team computational linguists engaged in similar work on
specific languages.
Preferred Skills:
- 5+ yrs of professional experience as a computational linguist
- 5+ yrs of professional experience as technical manager
- Advanced academic degree in linguistics
- Experience with creating morphological rules for languages both familiar
and unfamiliar
- Proficiency with regular expressions and basic Unix/Linux shell commands
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
- Strong analytical skills
- Ability to work independently
- Excellent skills in managing motivated independent linguist developers
- Proficiency in a scripting language (Perl, Python, Ruby, etc.) is a plus
The candidates will be responsible for:
- Managing a large group of computational linguists
- Developing and monitoring language development tasks across all 32+
languages
- Creating, developing, and maintaining lexicons and morphological rules in a
few specific languages
- Quality assessment of existing language work
- Ongoing testing and evaluation of language-related aspects of search
product
- Creating requirement and specification documents for new language-related
product features.
- Researching and evaluating alternative language analysis techniques and
tools
- Collecting, evaluating, and maintaining training corpora
