Call Deadline: 15-Mar-2013

Meeting Description:

Phonetics and Phonology in Iberia (PaPI) is a biennial international conference that brings together researchers interested in all areas of phonetics and phonology, with a special focus on the relationship between the two. It provides an interdisciplinary forum for discussion of phonetics and/or phonology and their related areas, such as language acquisition, language variation and change, speech pathology, speech technology, the phonology-phonetics interface and laboratory phonology research.

The conference has been hosted every two years by an Iberian university, and welcomes researchers working on any language(s). The sixth PaPI conference will be hosted by the University of Lisbon in June 25-26, 2013. The conference will include four oral sessions of 20 minutes presentations (plus 10 minutes discussion) of submitted papers, 2 poster sessions, and three invited talks.

The invited speakers of PaPI 2013 will be:

Angela D. Friederici (Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Leipzig)
Aditi Lahiri (Oxford University)
José Ignacio Hualde (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)

The two-day meeting will be preceded and followed by satellite events:

June 24, Workshop Advances in Prosodic Transcription II
Organized by: Mariapaola D'Imperio (Université de Provence) & Martine Grice (Köln Universität)
June 27, Workshop of the Project Development of prosodic structure and intonation
Organized by: Marina Vigário & Sonia Frota (Universidade de Lisboa)
Workshop of the project Interactive Atlas of the Prosody of Portuguese
Organized by: Marisa Cruz & Sónia Frota (Universidade de Lisboa)

Registration:

The registration fees are currently being finalized and will be published as soon as possible on the conference website. We will offer an early registration discount (deadline June 1, 2013) and a discount for students. Members of the Association for Laboratory Phonology are eligible for a reduced rate for the PaPI conference registration fee.

PaPI 2013 Venue:

PaPI 2013 will be hosted by the Laboratory of Phonetics and Lisbon Baby Lab Research Group (Labfon) in the Center of Linguistics at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon. The Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon is broadly based, interdisciplinary and internationally oriented. Graduate courses are strongly interweaved with research centers, and graduate students amount to one third of the Faculty students. The Centre of Linguistics is committed to theoretical, theoretically oriented, descriptive and experimental research leading to novel gap-filling contributions to linguistic analysis, language development and language processing, targeting both adult and child grammars. The Labfon Research Group is a multidisciplinary team of researchers developing laboratory-phonology oriented research. The main lines of research of the group are the following: Frequency patterns in phonology and phonetics, production and perception of prosody (prosodic phrasing, intonation, and rhythm), prosodic variation, and early language development (acquisition of prosody, early word learning).

Lisbon:

Lisboa is a historic capital, a potpourri of unusual character and charm, where 800 years of cultural influences mingle with modern trends and life styles creating spectacular contrasts in a friendly atmosphere. Fado is, par excellence, the music of Lisboa. It is today the most noble and genuine product of Portuguese popular culture.

Throughout June, Lisbon is dominated by saints days, which gives the festival its name, Santos Populares. The people celebrate with a program of cultural events, street parties and prayers. Cultural events take place throughout June, but the main saints' days are for Anthony (13 June), John (23-24 June) and Peter (28-29 June).

Call for Papers:

PaPI 2013 welcomes the submission of abstracts on any area of phonetics and phonology. In recent years, experimental approaches and data evaluation have been crucial in the process of answering many controversial issues within phonological theory. Studies in phonetics that can significantly contribute to enhance our knowledge of phonology and studies in phonology that crucially resort to phonetics and corpora analysis are especially welcome. Preference will be given to cross-linguistic comparisons and advanced techniques in laboratory phonology research.

Abstract Guidelines:

Abstracts should be written in English and not exceed one page of text. An extra page may be added for references, examples and/or figures. Font: Times New Roman, 12pt; Line spacing: single; Margins: 2,5cm. One copy of the abstract must be sent anonymously and another one with the author's name(s), email address(es), and affiliation(s). In the latter, the first line of the abstract should contain the title of the paper in boldface, the second line the author's name(s), the third line the affiliation(s) and the fourth line the email address(es). A blank line should be left between the title lines and the abstract text. Submissions should be sent electronically in Word or PDF format (PDF is required if the abstract contains special fonts/symbols or figures) to the following address: papi2013fl.ul.pt.

Deadline for abstract submission: March 15, 2013

Key Dates:

Deadline for abstract submission: March 15, 2013
Notification of acceptance: April 20, 2013
