Jena University Language and Information Engineering (JULIE) Lab at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena (Germany) is a major international player in the field of natural language processing and human language technology, with focus on biomedical text analytics. We invite applications for PhD positions both in applied areas such as: - Information extraction, text and data mining - Information retrieval - Ontology engineering as well as in methodological fields such as: - Statistical and machine learning foundations of NLP - Knowledge representation and automatic reasoning Job Profile: Candidates will be expected to have a strong educational background in the formal, statistical and empirical foundations of NLP, typically acquired from studies in computer science (preferably, with emphasis on Artificial Intelligence or Semantic Web technologies), computational linguistics (NLP) or information science (including Human-Computer Interaction). Candidates with interests / expertise in anaphora resolution, named entity recognition, relation extraction or modelling of / reasoning with uncertain knowledge will be given preference. Working languages are English and German; JAVA programming skills are highly appreciated. Domain knowledge in the life sciences would be an asset (though not necessary). Candidates should strive for international visibility and combine individual scientific excellence with strong team-playing capabilities. All positions are full-time (TV-L 13 on the German pay scale, approximately 40,000 to 45,000 € per annum) and can be filled immediately or remain open until filled.
