Job Reference Number: UOS003918 Job Title: Director IWLP/University Teacher or Senior University Teacher Faculty: Faculty of Arts and Humanities Department: Modern Languages Teaching Centre, School of Modern Languages and Linguistics Salary: Grade 8: £37,012 - £44,166 per annum. Potential to progress to £49,689 per annum through sustained exceptional contribution. Grade 9: £46,846 - £52,706 per annum. Potential to progress to £61,078 per annum through sustained exceptional contribution. The School of Modern Languages and Linguistics wishes to recruit a University Teacher, possibly at Senior University Teacher level, who will also serve one or more terms as Director of the Modern Languages Teaching Centre, contributing to a range of critical language initiatives that will shape non-specialist provision and specialist provision for non- linguists at the University for the coming generation. The post-holder will also be able to lead one of the major language programmes within our Centre, preferably the French programme, teaching a range of language modules and overseeing the work of a team of teachers. In addition to running a thriving programme catering to non-specialists and to engineers, mathematicians and scientists with language minors, the post-holder will, as Director of the Centre contribute to the shaping of the University's unique Languages for All programme, which aims to see half our undergraduates studying a language by 2015, and to the ongoing expansion of our language lab facilities into a new Learning Hub by autumn 2012 and to satellite sites thereafter. The Director will provide strategic direction, guidance, and effective line management for the Centre, and will represent the Centre on School, Faculty and University bodies. The post-holder should have an MA or PhD in a relevant subject area (or equivalent experience), as well as proven teaching ability at undergraduate level, ideally with a teaching qualification and experience of teaching one of our major languages, preferably French, to non-native speakers at all levels. Additionally, Senior University Teachers will have a national or international profile in language teaching development or teaching-related research. The Modern Languages Teaching Centre provides teaching in French, Spanish, German, Italian, Latin, Arabic, Greek and Irish. MLTC staff are involved in a range of innovative teaching and other activities, including: tandem learning; intercultural communication; local schools outreach; and Foreign Languages at Work certificates. The University of Sheffield has been named UK University of the Year in the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards. Beating five other shortlisted universities, the University was rewarded for having a strategy 'based on its values and rooted in its founding principles', as well as on its exceptional performance in research, teaching, access, business performance, and involvement in the local community.
