ICALL in the Digital Age: Leveraging Natural Language Processing in an Increasingly Connected Learning Environment
Pre-conference workshop at the CALICO conference 2013 in Hawaii

This workshop will explore the current state and future directions of ICALL (Intelligent Computer Assisted Language Learning) and discuss its potential impact on second/foreign language instruction and acquisition. The workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners who are working on ICALL related projects as well as colleagues from other disciplines are interested in ICALL and Natural Language Processing (NLP) in a broader sense.

The workshop is organized by the ICALL Special Interest Group of CALICO, currently chaired by Peter Wood and Ken Petersen.

Call for Papers:

We are inviting proposals for 30-minute presentations on ICALL related projects and position papers focused on integrating NLP technologies in pedagogical contexts. All proposals will be subject to a double-blind peer review process. The areas addressed in presentations can include - but are not limited to - the following:

Innovative approaches to ICALL
Working with NLP through APIs (OpenNLP, NLTK, etc.)
Web-service approaches to ICALL
Corpus-based ICALL
Analyzing learner language
Learner modeling
Automatic evaluation or feedback generation
Natural language generation and understanding

Please submit your abstract of no more than 300 words excluding references by February 28, 2013 by email to peter.woodusask.ca.

The preferred format for abstracts is PDF. We can also accept abstracts in plain text, MS-Word, or OpenOffice format. Please make sure to list the name of presenters and their affiliations in your email, but to omit all names in the actual abstract.
