Description:
Applications are invited for one two-year (2013–2015) postdoctoral research fellowship at the Language Research Centre (http://arts.ucalgary.ca/lrc/) at the University of Calgary. The scholar will have the opportunity to collaborate on ongoing and planned studies investigating the processing of prosodic cues in first and second language German and English. The postdoctoral scholar will make use of the NeuroScan electroencephalography (EEG) system housed in the Psycholinguistics Laboratory in the Language Research Centre to determine the extent to which various prosodic cues are processed. Applicants should have obtained a Ph.D. in psychology, linguistics or a related field no more than three years prior to the proposed start date (a mutually agreed upon date between July and December 2013), and can be either Canadian or foreign citizens. The applicant is expected to have expertise in the use of EEG systems and nativelike competence in English and German.
The postdoctoral scholar will participate fully in and contribute to the intellectual life of the Centre and the Department of Germanic, Slavic and East Asian Studies, collaborate with colleagues and graduate students in languages, linguistics and psychology, and provide leadership in the use of EEG technology. S/he may have the opportunity to teach one or more course in one of these fields.
The chosen applicant will be one of 60 new postdoctoral scholars hired by the University of Calgary in 2013 (http://www.ucalgary.ca/risingstars/researchers). With a population of over one million, Calgary is one of Canada’s largest head office cities and enjoys a vibrant economic climate based on energy, high-tech, financial services, and tourism. This business environment provides a variety of opportunities for scholars. Situated in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, the city offers excellent year-round recreational opportunities.
