I need to generate syntax trees in SVG along these lines:

http://biblicalhumanities.org/sandbox/greek-syntax-trees/svg/test.svg

I have already written a Python script to generate trees in this format, and was thinking of extending it in various ways, but surely there are already open source utilities to do this?

I am familiar with Miles Shang's syntax tree generator (http://mshang.ca/syntree/) and some others, but I haven't found one that works for really complex sentences. Ideally, I would like to put the text on the left, right, top, or bottom, with syntax trees growing in the appropriate direction.
