Meeting Description:
There has been a recent increase in interest in youth and urban language phenomena around the world. Youth and urban languages are seen to be at the heart of language change in postmodern societies, and a feature of contemporary diversity, or ‘superdiversity’ in our cities.
African urban and youth varieties provide striking examples for the investigation of mixing, coinages, syntactic change, lexical innovation and other dynamic language phenomena. This conference intends to bring together scholars from around the world in one of the locations where these varieties are prevalent - South Africa - in order to provide a forum where the field can be further developed and theorized. We invite scholars working in the field to join us in Cape Town to contribute to this burgeoning and challenging field of research purposes.
Call for Papers:
Papers can be relevant to (but not limited to) the following themes:
- African youth languages (Sheng, Camfranglais, Nouchi, Tsotsitaal, etc.) - Urban and non-standard varieties - Gendered varieties - Theorisation of youth & urban languages - Language variation and change - Language crossing, switching and mixing
Papers are furthermore welcomed on urban and youth languages phenomena from around the world, for comparative purposes.
