Meeting Description:

Along with audience design (Bell 1984, 2001) and attention (Labov 1994), phonetic reduction is the most salient characteristics of spontaneous speech (Shockey 2003, Johnson 2004, Ernestus and Warner 2011).

The aim of the thematic session is to investigate phonetic reduction and its processes in the context of dialects, languages and second language acquisition, with special reference to English.

Call for Papers:

This session welcomes contributions related to:

1. Variety of reduction processes in English
2. Reduction processes by non-native speakers of English
3. Linguistic and non-lingustic factors triggering reduction
4. Comparison of reduction across languages
