Description:

Language comprehension is influenced by many different factors. From a psycholinguistic perspective, we address issues of for instance, sentence complexity, ambiguity and the interaction with processing capacity as measured by certain memory span tasks. From a psychophysical point of view, language is a signal that has to be properly processed, to be intelligible. Intelligible language is not necessarily comprehended equally well by different individuals though. This project aims to investigate interactions between intelligibility and comprehension and correlate these with individual variations in processing capacity. This will be studied with reaction time as well as ERP and/or eye-tracking studies. In the end, we would like to find out how the brain reacts when it processes complex sentences and in how far this depends on intelligibility, complexity and processing capacity.

Duties of the candidate:

- To design, carry out and analyse sentence processing experiments, possibly with eyetracking and/or ERP
- To prepare scientific manuscripts about the effects of processing capacity on understanding and processing sentences and its interaction with e.g. sentence complexity

Desired experience of the candidate:

- Academic Master's degree in (Psycho)-Linguistics, Psychology (with a specialization in speech/language processing) or a related discipline
- Prior experience with statistical analysis, as well as with online sentence comprehension/ processing methods, such as RT studies, self-paced reading and eyetracking or ERPs
- Experience with Eprime and/or Matlab would be helpful, as well as good knowledge of English and working knowledge of German.
