Note: This position is part-time, expected to last through Sept/Oct, approximately 20 hours per week, but may vary more or less during the assignment. Please indicate desired hourly rate on application.
SRI's Speech Technology and Research (STAR) Laboratory is a research laboratory that focuses on creating leading-edge spoken language technology, including automatic speech recognition, machine translation, speaker identification, and other, related technologies. In addition to an impressive array of scientific accomplishments and ongoing research, STAR has spun off Nuance Communications and created a substantial licensing portfolio.
SRI would like to hire a Speech Synthesis Voice Developer. The task is expected to take about five months of work spread out over about nine months. The goal is to build a voice for speech synthesis for Iraqi Arabic, which will be used in a research project developing a spoken language translation system between English and Iraqi Arabic. The successful candidate will work closely with researchers with linguistic and computational expertise to choose a speech synthesis engine, recruit and record voice talent, and build and improve a voice. The candidate will also advise on pronunciation, perform lexicon maintenance, and run evaluations with native-speaker listeners. The candidate will work on-site in Menlo Park, CA.
Requirements: - Experience with speech synthesis technology (unit selection experience desirable); - Experience recording voice talent; - Acoustic phonetics background; - Experience interpreting speech waveforms and spectrograms; - General computer skills; - BA or higher in linguistics, CS, or related field.
Desirable: - Computational Linguistics in the context of speech synthesis; - Speech signal processing; - Use of scripting languages; - Ability to read Arabic script; - Text normalization Knowledge of Arabic.
