Meeting Description:

Over 2.500 of the world’s more than 6.500 existing languages are classified as endangered - not to mention dialects. This concerns mostly regional and minority languages. The numbers of active speakers is constantly decreasing as a result of natural circumstances, and the reasons for languages becoming endangered are diverse and interrelated.

The symposium, which is being held in the context of the Graduate School Language & Literature of the Ludwig-Maximilian University, focuses on three main topics:

1. The description and analysis of languages and their dialects which are distinguished from each other according to the degree to which they are threatened: In this connection, the ‘external’ conditions that influence languages and classify them as being ‘endangered’ will be presented and discussed, in addition to the ‘internal’ factors which are caused by the linguistic community itself.
2. The goals, intentions and methods of documentation of endangered languages and dialects: Not only classical methods will be presented but also what role the web 2.0 and other so-called new media are playing in this process will be considered in this part of the discussion.
3. Language policy measures which, from an institutional point of view, have a significant impact on the development and the degree of the vitality of a language.

Please send abstracts by email to symposium2013lipp.lmu.de, with the subject labeled ‘Symposium Abstract’ and put the details about the author (including name, email, affiliation and title of abstract) in the body of the email. The abstract should be 400-500 words in English or German, with the title of the paper and references (and data or diagrams if needed).
