Meeting Description:
We are pleased to announce the 3rd International Conference on Language and Law in Social Practice to be held at the Royal Palace of Caserta, National School of Public Administration (Scuola Superiore della Pubblica Amministrazione - instituted by the Italian Council of Ministers), Italy.
Drawing on some of the topics and discussions covered in the 2nd International Conference (10-12 May 2012), this third symposium seeks to expand on the relationship between law and language by exploring the role of legal discourse in a wide array of social/institutional settings, where it is an integral and constitutive part of the ‘social practices’ manifested in different languages, cultures and societies. The understanding of legal discourses and practices includes not only the legal rules, institutions, and processes constructed as part of social structures and systems, but also their impact on other diverse social categories and values where the agency of language-discourse is involved in various aspects of social life. This broad understanding provides the analytical framework for a socio-critical interpretation and application of legal discourse practices and procedures relevant to the forms that legal language assumes in a variety of social realities and contexts.

Conference will start the early morning of the 15 and close at lunchtime on the 17.
Venue:
The conference will take place at the Royal Palace of Caserta, National School of Public Administration (Scuola Superiore della Pubblica Amministrazione), instituted by the Italian Council of Ministers, Rome.
Equipment and Other Facilities:
Conference rooms in the Royal Palace are equipped with microphone and video projector for PowerPoint (Windows) presentations. In addition to PowerPoint presentations, speakers should bring as many photocopied handouts as they think appropriate. Photocopying facilities are not available on the premises. Speakers and other conference participants will have access to Wi-Fi networking technology for wireless high-speed Internet connections.

The conference aims to bring together scholars to examine socially grounded issues of current interest in law and language that include, but are not limited to, the following cross-cutting themes in which English and other European as well as non-European languages, cultures and societies are involved:
- Modes of production and systems of legal rules and decisions, including institutions, processes, and behaviours
- Identity, gender, race, religion, and social status, including human rights, ethnic diversity/equality, (anti)discrimination, migration, citizenship, and healthcare
- Ideology and justice across the political spectrum, including professional responsibility relative to confidentiality, conflicts of interest, miscarriage of justice, and ethics in the practice of law
- Crime and social deviance, including victimology, restorative justice, domestic/family violence, bullying, and other anti-social behaviours
- Social environments of law in Internet-based communication, including social media law
- Regulatory policy and risk in business law, including competition policy, compliance, governance, corporate social responsibility, public procurements/contracts, and legitimacy and accountability in international organizations
- Conflict resolution, including conciliation, negotiation, mediation, arbitration, class actions, diplomacy, and peace-building
- Forensic evidence relative to the investigation and trial of civil and criminal cases, and forensic medicine relative to the interaction between the practices of law and medicine
We therefore invite synchronic and diachronic proposals for papers and posters from diverse analytical perspectives including, but not necessarily limited to, any of the following areas of enquiry:
1. Discourse and genre analyses, including ethnographic, web, or corpus-based analyses
2. Critical discourse analysis
3. Media and cultural studies
4. Conversation analysis
5. Multimodal and other non-linear approaches to discourse analysis
6. Forensic linguistics, including computational and multimodal analyses
7. Intercultural communication
8. Translation and interpreting, including lexicography/terminography
9. Argumentation/logic
10. Philosophy of language
Presentation Guidelines:
Individual and joint papers will be allotted 20 minutes, plus 5-10 minutes each for discussion at the end of the part-session.

Abstract Submission: Papers and Posters:
Contributors are invited to send an anonymous abstract of their proposed paper or poster in MS Word (12pt) of not more than 300 words (excluding references) by no later than 31 October 2013 to the following address: erillunina2.it.
Posters should be 841mm x 1189mm in portrait orientation.
Contributors should specify in the abstract one of the ten analytical areas (e.g. 1, 2) and/or theme(s) into which their papers fall. Contributors should also send a separate cover sheet with the following information:
