Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; Language Acquisition

Meeting Description:

Studies in multilingualism and language acquisition focus largely on production. Yet communication and language learning begin with comprehension. This conference discusses the various aspects of comprehension and intelligibility across languages from multiple perspectives, such as linguistics, cognition, pedagogy and language policy.

The invited speakers:

- Charlotte Gooskens (University of Groningen, Department of Applied Linguistics, the Netherlands)
- Britta Hufeisen (Technische Universität Darmstadt, Institut für Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaf, Germany)
- Raphael Berthele (University of Fribourg, Institute of Multilingualism, Switzerland)

The aim of the conference is to bring together researchers who focus on, for example, the following topics:

- Mutual intelligibility across related and unrelated languages
- Theoretical and methodological issues
- Measuring distances between languages
- Pedagogical approaches to mutual intelligibility
- Social and psychological determinants of mutual intelligibility
- Mutual intelligibility in language policy (in European Union and elsewhere)

Papers based on conference presentations will be published in a peer-reviewed international publication (e.g. Lähivördlusi. Lähivertailuja).
