Job Title: Linguist for a Language Learning App

Job Rank: Linguist

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; Language Acquisition

Required Language(s): English (eng)

**This position has been filled.

We are a start-up building a language-learning app. It focuses on improving professional language skills of non-native English speakers in USA and abroad. We are targeting people who want to improve their English language skills in order to succeed in their career, get promoted, and get a better job.

5per5 is being built by a Swiss start-up focused on language learning. Its founder, Kevin von Tscharner, suffered a full memory loss in 2010. To recover his memory he devised a series of methods to learn languages in a fast and efficient way.

We are currently looking for a person interested in language acquisition. We intend to address language learning focusing on professional vocabulary and its usage. The questions that interest us are What kind of vocabulary makes us feel more confident in our professions? What words make the business communication easier and more successful? What are the anchor words that help us to be better communicators and how they affect our self-esteem?

As the first step 5per5 is designing a series of vocabulary enriching games and tests to be used on mobile. The language specialist will create the A-level content for these games and tests, as well as design the structure for language acquisition through vocabulary retention methods. We are looking for a highly motivated, passionate and forward-looking player. The person must also have a good sense of humor and be fun.

We are a start-up, thus the tasks and projects will be changing as we adjust to the market. Here is an overall list of possible tasks :
- Work with our team to determine basic language acquisition tactics
- Create the strategy for games content (how language games will be structured, how the difficulty will increase, the how it be scored, what is engaging and educational for the final users, etc)
- Create a portfolio of games and tools that our designers and developers could implement (i.e. come with actual game ideas, how they games will flow, how the result will be presented, what data needs to be collected, etc.)
- Help our team to create marketing materials (for example, help to create the content for the explanatory videos and the “how to” guide).
- Work closely with our team to evaluate user engagement, results, test scores, etc. We need the person to be always in the loop and looking at the results, talking to the users and improving the games and the learning process
- Write blog posts on topics related to language acquisition, how our speech affects our career, tips how to communicate and write better, etc. The topics are very open, but we need to create this kind of valuable content on weekly basis
- If you are interested and want to run larger experiments on how people acquire languages we would welcome any kind of scientific articles or publications on the topic. We would love you to spend time working on this kind of research up to 20% of your time

Other requirements
- Should be located in or close to San Francisco / Bay Area (California, USA)
- Advanced degree in Linguistics in English
- Interested in Language Acquisition and eLearning
- Have an interest in mobile and online technology (ideally some experience)
- Start-up experience is a plus
- Good organizational skills
- Previous project management and people management experience (desired, but not required)

We are currently a small international team of three people, and we will be raising funds early this spring. We are interested to interview the potential language specialist candidates prior to the fundraising. The job in question will start in summer 2014.
Please send us your application with your CV and motivation letter by email.
